The year was 1950. A small group, headed by Mrs. Illa Clement and Mrs. Mary Lewis Kleberg, met at the Church of the Epiphany to discuss establishing a day school. The first kindergarten class began that September with one teacher and thirteen children. A second kindergarten opened soon after and was followed by a pre-kindergarten group of four year olds. First grade was offered for the first time in 1960. Additional grades were added through the years as the demand developed.
The Epiphany Episcopal Day School became a complete elementary system in 1974 with classes from pre-kindergarten through fifth grade. Epiphany's first Head of School was Mrs. Cassie Clark. Cassie turned Illa Clement and Mary Lewis Kleberg's desire to give the children of South Texas an exemplary education based on Christian values and beliefs into a reality. Cassie created a unique school that provided the strong academic foundation that has produced world class leaders. The success that Epiphany School enjoys today, after almost 60 years, rests on the foundation that was so lovingly and diligently built by Cassie Clark.
